Witches Sabbats Post 1: Yuletide Greetings part 2
At every summer's end, the Holly King fought and won a battle with the Oak King for the rulership of the year, and reigned supreme over the dark season. At the end of the winter, another battle was fought, this time won by the Oak King, who ruled triumphantly over the summer months.
Lore has is that this occasion was reenacted on Yule and summer solstice every year in ancient pagan communities with chosen males who played the part of the Holly and Oak Kings, a battle would commence, and the predetermined loser would be sacrificed at the end of the ceremony.
A little dark yes, but history nonetheless, and just because it is not so cheery, doesn't mean it should be cast from our knowledge. Out past has a dark and bloody history, this is just a fact, luckily we have moved past these practices and Yule is now a highly cheerful and joyous annual tradition.
To be continued...
