Witchcraft, demonology, and the dark side of the craft...
While dark witchcraft, spirits, and demonology, isn't for all practicing witches, there is no denying it's existence throughout the history of witchcraft. An important thing to note here is that connections with the dead, calling to demons, and engaging dark craft are not considered EVIL practices, nor is it Satanism.
Witchcraft and Satanism can go hand-in-hand if you study Satanic-Witchcraft, and even then it is still not the study of all things evil. Satanism is actually a very humanist view of the world, a study of all things at the basics of human nature, and worship of Lucifer/Satan/The Baphomet.
In traditional witchcraft practice however, talking to the dead and connecting with spirits, calling to specific demons, and practicing dark craft are a major part of what the culture is built on. Human bones in witches brews, animal sacrifice (both in history...not today), graveyard ceremonies...it's all written in the history of the craft.
Dark witchcraft and worship is not specifically calling to demons and the dead, more so creating spells (prayers) & rituals (worships) involving other people, either present or as the subject of the spell/ritual. Most love spells would be considered dark witchcraft as they involve the will of others, other spells include spells to change a persons mind, for yourself or someone else to get/not get something, forgetfulness of others...etc. These are not sinister by any means, but do involve other people, this is why they are considered dark.
Demonology is a huge part of traditional witchcraft, but did you know not all demons are bad? "Demon" has very negative connotations associated with it, but some of the oldest demons recorded in old witchcraft texts, show a different side of true-demons...Here is a good example:
"Buer is a president of hell and a demon of the second order who commands 50 legions. His form is that of a five-branched star or wheel, and he moves by rolling himself. Buer teaches philosophy, logic, and herbal medicine He is also skilled in curing the sick and giving good servants." - (see photo below, taken from deliriumsrealm.com)
Even today witches in gypsy craft, traditional craft, Egyptian, you name it... are called on (and sometimes hired...a practice I don't really agree with) to connect with the spiritual world and the dead. For centuries this has been one of witches main calling cards, if you were not looking for a curse, love spell, or healing, you were trying to connect with a spirit (for good or bad). Many witches both in history and today consider themselves varying degrees of psychic or clairvoyant, or in modern terms a medium who can connect with spirits. Talking to the dead is not bad, and it is not evil. It is merely a spiritual connection between those who are here, and only partially here, through various energies.
Any one of these subjects, could (any have) get a book written on them, so this is just a quick overview to spark some thought...
So whether this type of witchcraft is something you stay far away from, or only partially take on, it is all just history and a good part of what all forms of witchcraft are built on...
Here is a link for a very interesting website about demons (direct link to the one I wrote about), for those who are unaware of their history, and maybe curious to know a bit more...

Buer, the 10th spirit, is a President who appears in Sagittary, and that is his shape when the Sun is there.
